Arete is the Greek Goddess of Virtue and Knowledge. Not much is known about her but she represents goodness, excellence and valor. The Greeks believed that virtue was an intrinsic part of who a person was. To be a person of "arete" was to exemplify the greatest ideals of humanity as the Greek understood them.
